Is Social Media Marketing Successful?

Is social media marketing successful?

That was the question posed by a new infographic shared on Mashable yesterday. And, it continues the debate on whether social media marketing works on a single dimension — ROI. While the title questions the success of social media marketing efforts, the data inside seem to show marketing folks have a positive outlook on social media marketing. But, you be the judge. Here’s the infographic from PageModo:

Is Social Media Marketing Successful?

Social media marketing successful; despite unmeasurable ROI

Those of you who regularly read my posts (thank you VERY MUCH) know I take a dim view on using ROI as the arbiter of social media marketing success. While ROI is a good metric for judging sales, production, investment, and other business functions, it’s pretty poor for judging marketing efforts unless you’re talking about couponing, discounting, some B2B marketing activities, or other pricing-related marketing functions.

That’s because the goal of most other marketing efforts is to affect consumer attitudes, not DIRECTLY affect their behavior. That’s because we can more effectively drive sales by creating positive attitudes about the brand than actually changing behaviors — the only way to DIRECTLY change behavior is to make it easier for someone to buy your brand. To directly affect behavior, you’re talking about making it cheaper or offering financing to make it easier to afford the product, or making it more readily available so consumers don’t have to exert much effort to buy the product. These things are VERY expensive and WON’T work unless the consumer already likes the brand.

Therefore, it’s more effective and cheaper to work on changing consumer attitudes (albeit with some efforts toward making it easier to buy the brand). That’s because we know positive attitudes affect behavior and we know these attitudes are a function of what your friends think about your brand as well as your own beliefs about the brand. Marketing researchers have shown this concept, originally developed by Fishbein and Ajzen in the mid 1970′s, works in almost every context.

While we KNOW attitudes drive consumer behaviors (especially buying behavior), we also know there’s a lag between changing the attitude and increasing the behavior. The length of that lag is based on a large number of factors including product features, such as durability, and consumer features, such as need and money. So, calculating an exact ROI for branding and other marketing efforts whose main purpose is to change attitudes is not very accurate. And, making decisions based on inaccurate measures of ROI leads firms to make bad decisions.

This is especially true in social media marketing, where we’re changing consumer attitudes using a media where transmission is slow — moving from one consumer to their social network and being shared again by members of that network. But, using social media rather than traditional media to transmit the firms message increases social media marketing success because

EXHIBITOR Research: Social Media Marketing for Exhibit Programs Increases by Nearly 90%

Follow-up to 2010 Survey Indicates Social Media a Powerful Tool for Face-to-Face Marketers

ROCHESTER, MN – May 31, 2012 – EXHIBITOR Media Group, the leader in trade show and corporate event marketing education, today announced the results of EXHIBITOR Magazine’s 2012 Social-Media Marketing Survey, sponsored by Lynch Exhibits Inc.  Following a 2010 benchmark survey, new data shows that the percentage of marketers using social media in their exhibition programs increased by nearly 90 percent.

Eight out of ten marketers say their companies are currently using social media for a variety of purposes, including exhibit marketing (58 percent), event marketing (36 percent), and other general marketing purposes (67 percent).

Those tapping into the marketing potential of social-media applications claim increased brand awareness, enriched relationships with clients and prospects, increased booth traffic and event attendance, additional press coverage, and increased sales as direct results of their campaigns. Yet fewer marketers are proactively setting measurable objectives to track the success or failure of their online efforts.

“It’s clear that the use of social media as a marketing tool has exploded over the past two years,” commented Travis Stanton, editor of EXHIBITOR magazine. “And while there are still challenges, including lack of time and resources, most respondents agree that social media is a powerful tool for face-to-face marketers.”

Comprehensive results of the 2012 Social-Media Marketing Survey will be published in the June issue of EXHIBITOR magazine.

For music, social-media marketing doesn’t trump quality

In 2004, a trio of researchers at Columbia University began an online experiment in social-media marketing, creating nine versions of a music-download site that presented the same group of unknown songs in different ways. The goal of the experiment was to gauge the effect of early peer recommendations on the songs’ success; the researchers found that different songs became hits on the different sites and that the variation was unpredictable.

“It’s natural to believe that successful songs, movies, books and artists are somehow ‘better,’” one of the researchers wrote in The New York Times in 2007. “What our results suggest, however, is that because what people like depends on what they think other people like, what the market ‘wants’ at any point in time can depend very sensitively on its own history.”

But for music fans who would like to think that talent is ultimately rewarded, the situation may not be as dire as the Columbia study makes it seem. In a paper published in the online journal PLoS ONE, researchers from the MIT Media Laboratory’s Human Dynamics Lab revisit data from the original experiment and suggest that it contains a clear quantitative indicator of quality that’s consistent across all the sites; moreover, they find that the unpredictability of the experimental results may have as much to do with the way the test sites were organized as with social influence.

Numbers game

In their analysis, Alex “Sandy” Pentland, the Toshiba Professor of Media Arts and Science, his graduate students Coco Krumme — first author on the new paper — and Galen Pickard, and Manuel Cebrian, a former postdoc at the Media Lab, developed a mathematical model that, while simple, predicts the experimental results with high accuracy. They divide the decision to download a song into two stages: first, the decision to play a sample of the song, and second, the ensuing decision to download it or not. They found that, in fact, the percentage of customers who would download a given song after sampling it was consistent across sites. The difference in download totals was due entirely to the first stage, the decision to sample a song in the first place.

And that decision, the researchers concluded, had only an indirect relationship to the songs’ popularity. In the original experiment, one of the sites was a control, while the other eight gave viewers information about the popularity of the songs, measured by total number of downloads. But on those eight sites, the number of downloads also determined the order in which the songs were displayed. The MIT researchers’ analysis suggests that song ordering may have had as much to do with the unpredictability across sites as the popularity information.

“We’ve known forever that people are lazy, and they’ll pick the songs on the top,” Pentland says. “There’s all this hype about new-age marketing and social-media marketing. Actually, it comes down to just the stuff that they did in 1904 in a country store: They put certain things up front so you’d see them.”

Quality, not

Prospect Hts. Officials Open To Video Gaming

Prospect Hts. city officials are on board with video gaming.

During Tuesday’s city council meeting, Prospect Hts. officials discussed the possibility of placing video gaming machines in area liquor establishments and hotels.

City Administrator Anne Marrin said though no official list of businesses interested in video gaming has been compiled, she has received an overwhelming number of phone calls and e-mails in the past eight months from businesses and hotels, including Rocky Vander’s Cafe and Players Pub Grill, expressing interest in the idea.

Though it’s ultimately up to the state as to whether or not businesses can possess video gaming equipment, the official deadline to apply for a gambling license is Aug. 1.

Licenses could bring up to five machines to each establishment.

“I see the whole thing as a positive move,” Mayor Nick Helmer said. “It’s a source of recurring income for us and this is where we’re at. Everyone wants a piece of the nickel and so do we.”

Ald. Patrick Ludvigsen (4th) sees no problem with the idea.

“It’s not like we’re bringing blackjack tables, it’s not like we’re bringing poker. I don’t think that we’re going to stop video gambling. I know some people are opposed to the idea in general, but it’s going to be no concern or cost for us,” Ludvigsen said.

Businesses would have to pay an annual fee to the state to continue operating a machine, but Marrin said since Prospect Hts. does not possess home rule authority, the city could charge each business up to an additional $25 per year.

The state would collect 25% of total revenues generated by the machines while the city would take 5%. The rest would be divvied up between the business, the operator and the manufacturer, Marrin said.

Ald. Bree Higgins (5th) was on the fence with the idea of video gaming, but said she would sit back and think about where she stands. One of her main concerns is how the machines would be policed, an issue Chief Jamie Dunne said he has not had first-hand experience in, but has researched.

Dunne added he would support any decision the council ultimately makes.

Ald. Scott Williamson (3rd), though, is personally against video gaming.

“I realize I’m only one person and I represent a number of people other than myself, so I will talk to others and see how they feel,” Williamson said.

In addition to the gambling license application, a business must also submit to a background investigation conducted by the Illinois Gaming Board or state police, disclose the identity of every individual, corporation or association with greater than 1% interest in the operation and pay a non-refundable application fee.

A business is only eligible if it possesses a liquor license and has resided in Illinois for a minimum of 24 months.

Marrin said since the idea is only being discussed right now, there is no established timeline for when machines would appear in

5 Ways to Keep Fit After Retirement

Being physically active is one of the best ways to stay healthy. Unfortunately, we are so busy with work and everyday life that it is difficult to find the time to be active until retirement. Many Americans working in sedentary jobs have few chances to become more active. Retirees certainly have a lot more spare time, but many people simply continue with their habitual sedentary activities. It’s great to relax, read, watch movies, and browse the Internet, but all those passive activities need to be balanced out by physical activities. Here are some ways to keep active in retirement:

Transportation. When we are working full time, we are always in a hurry because we don’t have enough time to do everything on our list. That’s one reason we tend to drive everywhere. In retirement, we can take the time to walk or bike to the store instead of driving. This is a great way to get your blood flowing and accomplish your errands at the same time. Walking or biking can be easy or difficult depending on where you live, but many people can fit it into their routine if they are willing to expend a little time and effort.

Family time. If you are lucky enough to have a small child or grandchild in your family, you can schedule time to take them to nearby parks and other outdoor activities. It’s a lot of work to keep up with small children, and you’ll work up a sweat in no time. Now that summer is here, there are many outdoor activities you can enjoy with family and friends, many of them for free. Kayaking and canoeing are great, low impact ways to spend your summer days. Check with your local parks and recreation department to see what kind of activities they offer.

Sports. Retirement is a great time to take up sports again. If you like group sports, look into a local basketball or volleyball league. Lower impact activities can include golf, bocce, swimming, and hiking. Classes such as yoga and Tai Chi are easy to learn and also very easy on the joints.

Gardening. Gardening is a great way to get outside, enjoy the sunshine, and burn off a few calories. You might discover your long-lost green thumb and reap a bounty from the garden this season. Organic produce is very expensive at the grocery store, but you can grow something yourself if you have the time. When I was working full time, I hated to spend a lot of time in the garden, mostly due to a lack of time. When you work five days a week, you don’t want to spend every weekend pulling weeds. However, with more free time, gardening can be a fulfilling way to spend spare time.

Housework. Let’s face it, who likes to do housework? Chores are a pain, but they need to be done. These chores can help burn off excess calories. Vacuuming, washing dishes,

5 Ways Digital Has Forced Agencies to Adapt

The Modern Media Agency Series is presented by IDG. A dedicated editorial team and more graphics led Intuit to win a BtoB Best of Social Media Marketing award. For a description of the Intuit site, view part 1 and find how the blog changed on part 2.

Change PinboardTechnology advancements have changed the way business gets done for all kinds of companies, including media agencies. Established agencies are competing with newer, more nimble firms founded by digital natives, and leaders in the field are innovating best practices and inventing new ways to deploy messages, activate consumers and measure outcomes.

Clearly, digital has forced us to adapt. But what are some of the biggest changes? We spoke with a few agency leaders to learn how the digital revolution has impacted their companies.

1. Strategic Counselor and IT Help Desk

Today’s clients are more educated: They are aware of the latest technologies and marketing opportunities that could benefit their brand. And thanks to the influx of tools and the increased availability of case studies and campaign concepts, clients are bringing more and more ideas to the table -– a double-edged sword, in some cases.

Leslie Bradshaw, president of JESS3, notes that a key agency role is “making sure that clients aren’t gravitating toward the latest ‘shiny object’ just because it is new, but rather helping them align their business objectives to the reason for participating in and leveraging a channel.”

In addition to communication strategies and tactics, agencies provide technical advice and support –- everything from recommending mobile apps to coming to the rescue when the website goes down.

But that’s just the beginning. Dynamit, a Columbus, Ohio-based interactive agency, also provides business-logic tools, intranets and vendor-management systems in addition to its digital agency services. As principal Nick Seguin explains, “Digital doesn’t just mean consumer-facing. Mobile apps and Facebook campaigns are cool and important, but as digital professionals, we see big market needs for competent agencies to be able to work in the consumer web, and also be able to do heavy lifting. We’ve found our engineering roots helpful and necessary, as many of our larger clients are asking for complex projects that need management and IT consulting skill sets, too.”

2. Scouting the Next Big Thing

While agency partners have always been charged with bringing fresh ideas to the table, there’s a greater importance on research and development. Today’s clients are savvy and well-informed, so leading agencies emphasize staying ahead of the curve and surprising with bleeding-edge concepts.

In some larger agencies, entire teams are devoted to scouting for “the next big thing.” However, even smaller firms allocate resources to stay abreast of the latest tools and trends. The goal is to gain a real sense of
